In my post about Aston’s at Asia Square, I shared that it was quite possibly the best value meat and steaks that anyone could ever hope for. Unfortunately, Aston’s has ceased its operations there…but not all hope is lost! For a new provider of value steaks has taken over.
Introducing Carvers, the western food stall that serves a variety of steaks, chicken and seafood dishes. You can find nicely priced chicken chops and enjoy lovely steaks without sending your wallet on a drastic weight loss programme. It was newly opened a couple of days back but only started serving it’s full menu yesterday.
Alright then, shall we get to the meat?
I had myself a Ribeye Steak 180g ($16.90) and it was very good value for money. The meat was tender, juicy and decently flavourful. Asked for medium-rare and it was prepared accordingly. Also loved the prominent grill marks that added a slight taste of charred meat to the flavours.
What I loved was that just like their predecessor, Carvers served their mains with two choices of sides. I decided on their Crisp Fries and Pasta Salad. Sadly though, the sides hardly delivered much value in terms of taste. The fries were limp and tasted ok. They didn’t have that golden brown appearance and despite being labelled as crisp, they provided almost no crunch whatsoever. Similarly, the pasta salad was more towards the bland side, with no discernible taste or seasoning that made it stand out.
As partners on the same plate, the sides definitely held the steak back instead of supporting the deliverance of great value. While I loved the steak, the sides just didn’t make the cut. 7/10.
A fellow meat enthusiast ordered the Sirloin Steak 180g ($15.90) and like me, was greeted with very decent steak. Naturally firmer than the ribeye, the sirloin delivered more flavour and was prepared at a nice medium as requested. Decorated with the same grill marks, the sirloin however looked quite a bit like a cow in my opinion. I also noticed that there wasn’t a prominent strip of yellow fat, which can be found in many sirloin steaks. The fat in this case appears to have been nicely rendered and blended well with the rest of the meat.
My friend piled on a bread roll with butter and a potato salad for his sides. They didn’t taste great but provided enough substance for a filling meal. Though ‘fulfilling’ is what really adds to any meal’s true value. 6.8/10.
The prices shown are nett, with no GST or service charge added. The kiosk is found in Asia Sqaure’s Food Garden, so the ambience is superb for a food court. Service is friendly and pretty prompt. Crowd management was actually quite decent for their first ‘full menu’ day.
Should You Try It?
Yes, especially if you like budget-priced, quality steaks. Don’t expect a satisfying meal though, since the sides might bring the tempo down a little.
