Update: Astons has confirmed that their supplier imports beef from a well-known Australian beef plant. They also indicated that they serve only chilled (not frozen) beef to customers, which helps ensure a certain quality.
You know how your favourite dining joint never fails to get you excited…even when you’re just thinking about it? Well, the next steakhouse I’m going to write about is pretty much as good as it gets in my opinion. They deliver so much value and satisfaction that I am always looking forward to eating there. In fact, it’s one of the rare places where I can confidently “declare” it of superb value without any caveats.
Since 2005, Astons has made it a point to serve up quality food at affordable prices. And after multiple experiences with them, I wholeheartedly agree!
Located within the CBD, it’s really surprising as to how much satisfaction this place delivers. Ask any beef-enthusiast, meat-lover or lazy meater and they will agree that the quality of meat found at this outlet is easily above-average. Forget about chasing after Wagyu steaks or hunting down the priciest cuts from Michelin-Starred restaurants. In this Astons Express outlet, it’s all about deliciously home-styled value.
Their menu contained around 50 items (including sides) and when you think about how crowded it gets during peak lunch hours, and how long it takes to properly prepare quality meat dishes, that’s a pretty tall order to fulfil.
After taking a minute to browse their selection, I went with the Prime Ribeye ($16.50) steak (big surprise…) and chose double fries for my sides (healthy…I know…). I’m still checking but I believe they use Australian beef. They also had the option to add a drink for just $1, which was yet another mind-blowing value offer. And we’re not talking about just hot beverages here. Choices included a range of soft drinks and iced lemon tea! I mean…come on…that’s great value!
So when the order was ready (it’s self-collect) I received a picture-perfect steak with a generous serving of double-portion fries. The meat was close to poetry in motion – succulent beef done to a perfect medium, something anyone can rightfully expect to never happen when one considers the price. Yet I found myself gleefully enjoying a superb steak that was well-prepared throughout. The fat was well-rendered and connective tissue was almost non-existent. Quality could rival the beef I tried at Bread Street Kitchen and The Marmalade Pantry.
The shoestring fries were well prepared and lightly seasoned with what I believe was cayenne pepper. They were crunchy on the outside and soft, fluffy awesomeness on the inside. This of course meant that finishing the carbohydrates was sinfully easy to accomplish. And the iced lemon tea tasted as good as homemade stuff, with none of that overly sweet syrup.
My dining companion went with the Chargrill Chicken ($8.50) which was just another nugget of value eats. They always use chicken thigh and it’s actually a respectable portion. Unlike several coffee shops (and even restaurants) where an underdone chicken MUST happen once out of every 5 orders, I have yet to see this happen with Astons Express. The meat is thick, plump and juicy brilliance and the skin is just as awesome. So while it costs more than the chicken chops you find at coffee shops, diners gladly pay more for this and it’s completely understandable!
In this case, my companion had wedges for one of the sides and it was as crispy and fluffy as anyone would have hoped. So another side that’s highly recommended.
While Astons Express takes a no-frills approach to their setting, the dining experience was happily memorable thanks to their location. Food Garden is a food court with high ceilings, clean settings and well-polished tiled floors in Asia Square, and that adds a lovely ambience to the Astons experience. So diners here are basically enjoying restaurant quality atmosphere while paying slightly above-average food court prices. And when you bring in the consistent quality of food from an outlet like Astons Express, the combination of factors just brings the whole experience to an awesome, value-for-money level.
Should You Try It?
Yes. I’ve tried their chicken and their steaks and I say go for it. Their fries are my favourite sides but that’s always open to anyone’s opinion. I would even say that this place is a great pick-me-up for diners in dire need of mood-lifting meats.
