I know, I know…it wasn’t too long ago that I reviewed this place, but when you find out how this place surprises me every time, you won’t blame me for featuring them again. It was during a visit to Vivo City when I saw their outlet, and the taste of the decadent Hazelnut Crunch came flooding into my mind. Naturally I suggested the place to my wife and we both took a much-needed break from shopping around with our son.
Just before getting into the food, I decided to read a little more about them so as to find out more about their philosophy and attitude towards food. Artisan Boulangerie Co. is a contemporary bakery with touches of French influence and led by award-winning artisan baker, Eran Mayer. Their focus is on quality, creativity and consistency. I especially liked that last trait they mentioned, since it’s really what sets the good brand apart from the awesome ones!
They went on to state that their products are of the highest quality, entirely natural and hand-picked from the best farms worldwide. The ingredients they use include cage-free eggs, hormone-free chicken and ‘superfoods’ like kale, avocado and salmon. In addition, their food is made fresh each day, without using preservatives or artificial colours. I have to admit that all along, I thought their products were made in one central kitchen then delivered to the respective outlets. But when I tried their dessert for the first time, I realised that the taste could not come from a factory.
Now that we’re all caught up on how abc thinks, let’s look at what I had this time.
Being a fan (or fool) for rich desserts, I tore my gaze from the Hazelnut Crunch and went with the Salted Caramel Lava Cake. Not a bit of regret, whatsoever!
Since the cake was warmed up before being served, I was expecting a soft and molten chocolate centre made with robust bittersweet chocolate. To my delight, the entire cake was soft enough to melt in one’s mouth. I was really impressed as to how it held it’s shape, especially after I cut through it, exposing the soft and gooey centre. Hats off to the culinary skills shown here!
As for the taste, it was brilliant stuff. The caramel was just sweet enough and had a slight burnt aftertaste, with the cake being light enough so the molten chocolate centre didn’t have too hard a time standing out.
Next, we tried the Chicken and Mushroom Pie. My wife wanted a more savoury bite and I felt that this would do the trick. It turned out that the pie was a veritable magician, as it did more than just the proverbial trick. The filling was the definite highlight, with generous chicken and mushroom chunks buried in thick gravy, all cradled in a tender pastry exterior. I do wish the exterior had more texture, whether flaky or crumbly or anything along these lines. The exterior felt like dough that’s been egg washed and baked for the sole purpose of holding great content, but adding almost nothing to the pie.
Service was reasonably polite and efficient, the decor and ambience was very decent. The Mrs and the son definitely enjoyed the people-watching during our little break.
Should You Try It?
Definitely. Do go for what I’ve mentioned here, then move forward with other treats.
