This journey for the best value steaks in Singapore is fueled by a passion that has lasted for at least two decades. During these ‘starting’ years, I came across only a handful of places that delivered memorable steak meals. One was Lawry’s The Prime Rib and the other, Black Angus Steakhouse.
Fast forward almost twenty years and here I am, seated in the same steakhouse where I enjoyed a remarkable slab of beef. The slightly dimmed, warm lighting and sofa family seats were adding to the building anticipation I was feeling after placing my order with the waiter. After all, few things are better than reliving a pleasant memory, especially one that involves good steak. Things however, didn’t go exactly as expected and I’ll share more in the following review.
Now, on to the meat.
Seeing as how I’m all about value-loving, it was only natural that I gave their set lunch a go. And as most of you would have expected, I chose the Prime Rib of Beef ($23.90) for the main course. It featured a 5 oz. (140 grams) cut of slow-roasted Prime Rib without the bone.
While I ordered a medium-done steak, what I received was almost well-done and any meat-lover knows that cooking a steak all the way through is like turning meat into rubber. Because my family and I already waiting almost 30 minutes for our mains, I didn’t have the endurance to send the meat back. So I ended up battling the dark brown piece of beef throughout the meal, sawing tiny bits off one at a time (because I couldn’t chew anything bigger than that).
It also lacked the salty brown crust on the outside and I couldn’t find the ribeye cap anywhere. Maybe it’s a cut that’s supposed to look like that? Overall, it was quite possibly the most underwhelming steak I’ve ever had. Despite being wonderfully priced, I just couldn’t find any redeeming qualities.
The fries were decent though and hopefully, it’s a one-off thing. I’ll withhold my rating for this experience, and perhaps the readers can share their views about this place to reassure me that it’s better than I think. Rating: N/A.
The ambiance and decor were mainly about warm lighting and rustic furniture. It feels like a classy steakhouse fused with one of those wild west cowboy bars. The staff were friendly enough and promptly responded whenever called upon.
Should You Try It?
Seeing as how they have a longstanding reputation for great steaks, I think you can give it a shot and let me know how it went. But based on my experience, I can safely say that I will not be coming back any time soon.
